The Scottsdale City Council has approved a $4 million construction contract for the first phase of the Brown Avenue parking structure expansion in Old Town. The decision, passed with a 5-2 vote, aims to add two additional levels to the existing structure, providing 186 more parking spaces.
Supporters argue that the expansion addresses the growing demand for parking in Old Town, especially during peak events like spring training. Vice Mayor Adam Kwasman emphasized the necessity of proactive infrastructure development, stating, “Right now we need parking in Old Town. A decade from now we’re not going to have an opportunity to make the changes that we will need and we’re going to be wishing that we had this one back.”
However, the project has faced opposition from some community members and business owners. Concerns include the potential displacement of the Old Town Farmers Market and the structure’s compatibility with the area’s historic character. Mayor Lisa Borowsky, one of the dissenting votes, expressed her reservations: “One of my key priorities was to revitalize and beautify Old Town. And I think this garage does exactly the opposite of that.”
The expansion is funded by a 2019 bond measure approved by voters, with a total budget of approximately $18 million. Construction is scheduled to begin soon, with the goal of completing the project in time for next year’s spring training season.
As the city moves forward with the expansion, ongoing dialogue between the council and the community will be essential to address concerns and ensure that the development aligns with Scottsdale’s vision for Old Town.
