The Scottsdale City Council has approved the expansion of the Brown Avenue parking structure in Old Town, a decision that has sparked both support and opposition within the community.
In a 5-2 vote, the council approved a nearly $4 million construction contract for the first phase of the project, which will add two additional levels to the existing parking structure on 1st Street and Brown Avenue, providing 186 more parking spots. This expansion is funded by a 2019 bond measure approved by voters, with a total budget of approximately $18 million. Source
Supporters argue that the expansion is necessary to address parking shortages in Old Town, especially during peak events like spring training. Vice Mayor Adam Kwasman emphasized the need for proactive infrastructure development, stating, “Right now we need parking in Old Town. A decade from now we’re not going to have an opportunity to make the changes that we will need and we’re going to be wishing that we had this one back.” Source
